Theres not a lot of information on the activities of Francis during WW1, but what we do know is:

Service Number: 6560
he served in the Australian Imperial Force 4th May 1916 to 10th Oct 1919, 
he was in England and France during 7th Feb 1917 to 2nd Sept 1919

The National Archives have combined his WW1 and WW2 Service Records

Enlisted in the 2nd Australian Imperial Force at Newcastle, New South Wales on 26 June 1940 and allotted Army number NX45613. He stated on enlistment that:
he was born at Kempsey, New South Wales on 31 August 1900, and
his next of kin was his Wife, Mrs Elizabeth Mary Fuller of Short Street, West Kempsey, New South Wales

1st Australian Infantry Training Battalion
2nd Australian Armoured Training Regiment
6th Australian Armoured Regiment
1st Australian Infantry Training Battalion
