Enlisted in the 2nd Australian Imperial Force at Kempsey, New South Wales on 20 October 1939 and allotted Army number NX1524. He stated on enlistment that:
he was born at Kempsey, New South Wales on 5 November 1914, and
his next of kin was his Wife, Mrs Mary Fuller of Newcastle, New South Wales

Embarked at Sydney, New South Wales for service overseas with the 2/2nd Australian Infantry Battalion name of transport not listed on 10 January 1940

Served in the Middle East from 10 January 1940 to 27th February 1943 with the following units:
2/2nd Australian Infantry Battalion
16th Australian Infantry Brigade
16th Australian Anti-Tank Company
2/1st Australian Convalescent Depot

Disembarked in Sydney, New South Wales from the Middle East on 27 February 1943
